FOS...Disney Style Aug. 21st, 2008 @ 09:05 am
Have to love that the day before I left for Disney, they let me know that I actually have a job.

"Welcome to Walt Disney World Industrial Engineering! You will be
joining the Facilities and Operations Services team within the IE
department. We primarily support back of house operations including
Engineering Services, Textile and Distribution Services, Security
Operations and more. Your specific assignment is still being developed
but will most likely involve assessing Preventative Maintenance job plan
accuracy and working with Operations to identify and implement
improvements."

So what do you guys think I am going to be doing? I am confused to say the least.

Tomorrow I have orientation and move in. (Should be terribly exciting in the middle of tropical storm Fay.)

What a weekend! May. 4th, 2008 @ 04:34 pm
I had been looking forward to this weekend for a long time. Exams done, and the last play time before my friends travel the world without me and then I head off to FL.

It was such a gorgeous day Saturday, so a few of my friends and I went and played tennis. 3 doubles games later I had still not been on the winning team, and in every effort not to screw up...I swung at a ball obviously too far behind me. But I could not just fall over and look stupid. I somehow fell over, looked stupid, and repeated "ouch" --in Lord have mercy fashion-- as I broke 4 little bones in my left-wrist.

Urgent Care was really speedy; thank goodness I did not go to an emergency room! Apparently lack of water, heat, no food, and medical procedures was too much for one of my friends. No sooner had we sat down in the car, Dan went into a mini seizure from "heat exhaustion." That was the most terrifying experience and pretty humbling- a broken arm does not seem so bad.

I am praying that I can get into a orthopedist Monday or Tuesday, and also that I won't need a cast. But I'll keep y'all updated on my fascinating medical procedures. lol ;-)

I'm so sorry to miss all the fun this weekend. But here's to a productive (yet less eventful) week!

Disney Anyone? Mar. 18th, 2008 @ 10:52 pm
I am finally excited about engineering. Over spring break I laughingly sent out my pathetic resume to every major company I could think of. And wouldn't you know it...some of them actually liked me!

So Florida here I come. This fall I am going to co-op for the Disney engineers for the Walt Disney Cruise Line!!!! Basically this is my dream job, and I have been a nervous wreck for the past 2 weeks.

I had my interview totally scripted for every question he could ask me. But in true fashion, he did not ask me a single question I had stayed up until 2am perfecting. Combined with his thick spanish accent, my lack of any experience, and my nervous answers, I was sure I had bombed the interview. But I guess he liked me for my voice, because I just got a phone call from HR saying they want me!

So plan your family vacations now (I get 3 semesters down there so if fall doesn't fit the schedule we can try for my next rotation)! I get friend discounts and even free tickets to bring a few people into the parks. They pay me travel expenses, around $12-15 an hour, and I get to ride the teacups whenever I want!!!! See Disney does make dreams come true!!!!

And just for the fun of it I am continuing my interview next week for a summer internship at BMW. Talk about perks! They are paying me travel expenses to come interview in SC and giving all the candidates a private tour of the plant. Even though there is no way I could get this job (or that my mother would let me accept it) I am loving all these amazing opportunities. And as I had to tell my uncle today, I can NOT get you a new Z3 for free.

Gosh it is going to be painful when I have to hit the books again!

Strange Twist of Events Feb. 22nd, 2008 @ 01:53 pm
I went into the doctor again to confirm that I am not allergic to anything else, because avoiding wheat has only made me feel worse.
Can you believe it? The test came back. I am not allergic to anything. Not WHEAT, not eggs, not dairy, not peanuts, nothing. And not even "moderately allergic" the test said "no allergy".

I am about to have it out with the doctor who thought: inconclusive test results + negative intestinal sample = celiac disease.

But I have not tested this theory. Frankly I am terrified. Because I could always be "intolerant" and not "allergic." And if I have pizza and get sick, I have lost all hope...forever...again.
Maybe this spring break I will work up the courage, maybe I will get the second chance I have prayed for.

To Whom It May Concern,

I was deceived by your cute little sunshine with it's flash rays changing as if to smile at you. How could the innocent mini white cloud off to your side have meant gloom and doom. This is life and death for us poor college students who see "65 and Sunny" and put on our cute short sleeve tee-shirt, fancy jeans, high-heels (for once because today was supposed to be beautiful according to your pictures). But as soon as it is too late to turn back, ker-plop right in the middle of the forehead with a big rain drop. Then the skies turn black and the world seems to turn into Mordor.

So it's to you Mr. Weathermen-type-people we ask....
WHY CAN YOU NOT GET THE WEATHER RIGHT?? IS IT REALLY THAT HARD?!?
I can find the amount of sheer on the bolt in the center of a 104 foot story building, how hard can it possibly be to tell me for sure if it will rain!! -.-

-Disgruntled College Students Everywhere

PS- Mostly disgruntled about NC State's terrible sports teams, but the weather only adds to our misery.

» Get thee to a nunnery
I signed up to go to a Monastery. Well, not for forever...yet. I thought I'd take a tour and see if I liked the place. The visit is with a girls from the the surrounding states Orthodox Christian Fellowship Groups.
It's the greek monastery in Troy, NC (http://www.panagiaprousiotissa.org/index.html).
So my ingenuous solution to all my terribly unimportant college girl problems- is to become a nun.
*insert hysterical laughter here*
No more physics tests I can't pass, no more worrying about what guy I am supposed to marry, no more can my mother nag me about what she thinks I should do with my life....I dunno sounds pretty good to me.

But then reality sinks in. I think I will have to hold off on my nunnery dreams until I'm an old widow stuck on a remote island in greece. Dang it. I guess I do have to be nice to guys.
» Summer Vacations
I should write an Ode to the Airport but my extreme dislike of them and planes prevent me from saying anything nice, so I better say -almost- nothing at all. But when you are trying to visit family and you leave friday evening to come back sunday afternoon, the last thing you want to hear is that your plane is delayed 2 hours...both ways!

But despite my family now having a grudge against the state of Ohio, we had a delightful weekend. Mike and Trina Damas' new little girl Myka was baptised. (Many Years little one.) And in true Mike style he caught my eye in the middle of the service and asks me to read the epistle on the next page...oh yeah no problem, I have never done it before, but how hard could it be. Famous last words...I was so terrified that I would mess up the chanted lines at the beginning, that by the time I actually had to read the Bible verses, I lost all ability to speak.
God must have been laughing as He sent my little God-daughter Ziya to come hold my hand. That was really reassuring until she promtly tried to lift up my skirt for the entire congregation. Lord, You have quite a sense of humor. I have a new found admiration for all the priests, readers, clergy, etc. I don't know how you guys do this every sunday - once was quite enough.

I just remembered that it's my name day! I needed a little reason to smile.
» Happy Birthday...
Happy Birthday to Noah and I!!!
...although I am sad to say I feel pretty old. I mean, 18 was a great milestone because imaginary "adulthood" was placed on you. And we all know why 21 will be delightful. But 19 seems to be a confused age. I am tired of being counted a stupid teenager, but heaven forbid I be in my twenties with a quarter of my life slipping through my grasp.

Oh well, chocolate chip gluten-free cupcakes will hopefully excite me out of my contemplative mood. hehe
» One of those days....
I am having a klutzy kind of day. First you must envision me, this not even 5 foot girl bundled in massive jackets and a backpack 3x my size that no one understands who I can stand up straight. So I was trying to find a table and on the way I tripping over a stupid chair in the middle of the dining hall. I managed to save my food, but not my pride. And this girl watched me and giggled to herself as I stumbled away...ok it was kind of funny. Then as I went to leave I dropped the silverware off my tray, again right in front of this same girl, needless to say I was now mortified as she was about to roll on the floor laughing at my stupidity. :-)

I am so excited about the church packed weekend. But I got a call from my mother that the doctors want to poke me some more, I thought they got their fill but oh no. So one more surgery on this friday to find out if I have celiac (allergic to wheat, etc.). That would just make my day. All I need is to be in college unable to eat cookies and pizza. That, I may not survive.

I think I may have to skip homework and watch the Little Mermaid to console myself.

I am officially a college student. I was really attached to my only child status - so I had worried this day would come. My potluck roommie and I are all moved in and classes don't start until Tuesday, so now the socializing begins. That is the hard part. But I was very lucky to have a great roommate who is even a Christian, I can't believe I managed that. So if your ever in the neighborhood of Lee Hall...room 911....give me a ring. I always need more distractions!
» Why me?
I hope everyone is going to see Pirates very soon, because that had to be the best sequel I had ever seen. And also if you find time to pray for me I would greatly appreciate it.
I woke up on saturday morning and was having a hard time breathing. When that did not go away after 2 hours we made a lovely trip to the emergency room where they diagnosed me with some random disease, which was an inflammation of the tissue that connects your ribs to your sternum. But thankfully they had some drug that was supposed to fix it, so I chugged a pill and went to see Pirates. :-) Sunday morning I woke up and as I rolled over to get out of bed I saw my hand. I did not remember painting myself orange before I went to sleep. I was terrified as I ran to the mirror realizing my skin was the brightest color orange that a human could ever achieve. After church we went to target to ask the pharmicist if the medicine was at fault and he would not even answer our question but said I needed to contact a doctor immediately. That is always reassuring to hear. Come to find out, the drug that I took on saturday reacted with my blood disorder and gave me hepatitus. (Don't worry it is not contagious.)

But a really interesting fact I have learned through all this is that if you have hepatitus and get out in the sun, you will remain permanently orange. Sweet huh?! So there is my rant about how much I enjoy doctors and hospitals, not to mention my encouraging mother who actually said to me, "Don't you feel bad for me that I may have to sit in another hospital room this weekend." Open mouth insert foot, please.

What an amazing month.
My trip to London, Paris, and Barcelona was nothing short of the best times of my life. But what can you expect from 11 days with some of my closest friends. Here is the really really quick version. London was rainy, suprise. But the historical value was amazing. The inside of St. Paul's Cathedral rivals even Notre Dame. But my favorite place was Oxford. I am promising myself that one day I will study and/or live there. We saw C.S. Lewis' home and gravesite, J.R.R. Tolkien's house, and we ate lunch at The Bird and the Baby - as The Eagle and Child is affectionately named. In the town we passed by people on the street and they were not talking about the latest celebrity gossip, rather they were uncovering the underlying assumptions of the latest arguement they had read about. I just fell in love. Then we took the Chunnel to France and the first night we ate bananas flambee crepes on the Champs Elyses and saw the Arc de Triumph all lit up. And I must say that the Eiffel Tower is more impressive than any pictures give it credit. But I must gloat that I went to Versailles and saw The Hall of Mirrors!! It litterally took my breath away. It is a huge hallway about 20 feet wide lined with the mirrors on one side which reflect the sun from the other full side of windows. All the gold glittered with the beams of sunlight. Then we took a $10 plane ride to Barcelona. You can imagine what kind of a flight that was. Barcelona is known for being one of the biggest party towns in Europe and we hit the main strip at 2 am with all the drunks trying to find our hostel. What fun, I definately received an education that night. Besides hitting the Mediteranean coast I tried calamari, garlic shrimp, and paiya for the first time in this adorable seafood restaurant right on the coast. Then we made our way down to the topless beach which horrified our chaperones. They must have forgotten we were not in America. Spain was a beautiful country during the day, too much of a party town at night.

I returned one day before my baccalaureate and then Graduation on Saturday. I had one day of true summer vacation before I started my 8-5 job at a christian construction firm on tuesday morning. Last friday I rewarded myself with a brand new Macbook Pro for college. I have worked at Trinity for 6 days and today my boss was not feeling well, so I am running the entire office, answering phone calls and all.

I don't like this real world stuff. Let me go back to the slow lane of Europe.

I leave on my senior trip to London, Paris, and Barcelona in approx. 3.5 hours! Yippy. Flamenco dancing, London eye, bike rides on the Champs-elyse, etc. 11 days in Europe with 22 of my closest friends should provide many interesting stories. See you all when I get back!

PS- Your prayers are appreciated ;-)

I finally got the pictures from senior prom. I had a great time despite the fact I had the exact same dress as another girl. Which is quite forgivable if I had not asked the every junior/senior girl (except her) what dress they had, just to avoid such a problem.
I also found out today that my application for a double major at NC State in the humanities/social-sciences and engineering was accepted. :)
I just finished up the play, Two Gentlemen of Verona, that I was the assistant director and producer for. I also got to play an adorable puppy...pics for that will be comming out soon.
This saturday is a choral compitition and trip to Busch Gardens, next week are SAT II's and AP Calc exam. Besides a few tests and projects, after that is vacation time. I head off to London / Paris / Barcelona. Then I come back and graduate 2 days later.

Quite a whirlwind adventure, hopefully I will survive!

I signed my life away to NC State...My parents are thrilled. So, Go Wolfpack! I am not too excited about this college thing; I am hoping I will warm up to it fairly soon.

I had a lovely time this weekend at homecoming. Friday night both the guys and girls lost, but Mark and Allison came to see me. So that made it all better. Saturday night was the dance. It was a nice night although I am losing all hope in men. My date (Dylan) did not speak to me the entire night. I was at least hoping for a, "You looked pretty." But I guess that was a bit much to ask.

Then I spent that night at a friend's house. In the morning I sat down and we all watched a live-stream online of their non-denominational church. No problem, I was quite enjoying some of the very interesting tradions etc. But then communion came and they said if you feel comfortable please join us. I vaguely remember a conversation with Deacon david in Sunday school where we said you should never take communion outside the church. So after much deliberation, I kindly passed. But I must say church in someone's living room and communion at their kitchen table- that was a new one for me. I hope I ended up doing the right thing.

Happy 18th B-day to me!
» Summary of my life...

What a Crazy Senior Year!

  • My applications to NC State and UNC are in the mail! I should hear back in late January, so keep me on the prayer list.
  • I also have gotten my senior pictures back, which are posted on my flickr for your viewing pleasure. :-) (http://www.flickr.com/photos/girlgenius21) My scanner is not very good, but I think you will get the idea of what I look like all dolled up.
  • I am playing the leading lady in my school's one act drama production of Moliere's Tartuffe. I am so scared I will forget my lines, because I have never really acted before. But if my drama teacher has that much faith in me, I can at least give it my all.
  • I am also enjoying fighting my theology teacher off with a stick. He knows just enough about Orthodoxy to annoy me to no end. He concludes everything I say with, "Kalli comes from a tradition that is very different from ours..." as if Orthodoxy needs a disclaimer in our modern Christian culture...oh well. My senior thesis on the differences in the form and purpose for salvation between Orthodoxy and Protestantism, should give him something to put in his pipe and smoke.

» Advice Needed...
I thought I should ask some advise from my wise fellow LiveJournalers... What should be the topic for my senior thesis? I need something like a controversial issue, that I can argue one side of. So if you have any ideas, please pass them on!

My senior year has been wonderful so far. Stressful, but never-the-less an exciting time.
I was working up the nerve to tell my Theology/Philosophy teacher that I am the only Orthodox at a Protestant school, so I decided I should let him figure it out by dropping hints like..."and this is why the process of deification is necessary." Yeah, he took the bate. And the conversation that followed was not as awkward as the usual ones, where they say, "So please share your [*cough weird*] traditions with us." Come to find out he has even visited a Lebanese Orthodox Church before, so I am feeling quite blessed.

PS: Deacon David-- If you are reading this, please know that Sunday School is terribly boring without you.
